Students are required to fulfil the following conditions in order to qualify to sit for the annual examinations:

  1.          Other than exceptional one, the student must have 80% class attendance.
  2.          Root test must be submitted on time proposed.

The question papers are prepared by the scholars of this and other reputed institutions as requested by examination controller. The examination controller assembles during the opening of question papers and then input them into computers.  If question papers are leaked while they are being made, new question papers are prepared.

The annual examination starts on the 26th of the Tenth Tibetan Month every year.  Prior to this, between the 3rd and 25th of Tenth Tibetan Month, the students are given preparation leave (self-study) for the examinations. All the texts studied in the year’s syllabus are compiled into five papers, where they have to write for five times, each carrying the hundred marks in total.  In between each paper, three days preparatory leave is allotted.

The duration of the examination is three hours, with fifteen minutes extra given for editing.  There are choices of questions and most of the paper consists of five questions to be answered. Some papers include compulsory questions. Index numbers of the examinees are pasted on the floor of the examination hall and they are kept quite far away from each other to avoid copying.

During the exam time, students enter the hall at 6:30am till 7:00am and they are not allowed to carry any material other than pens and hand-pat. In case, if student is found carrying unfair means, examiner shall act as the rules of exam. The candidate must fill the front page of answer sheets showing their index number, the particular subject, day and date, place and class.  Names and admission number are forbidden to write for reasons of confidentiality. After carefully reading the question papers, the examinees start writing the answers. The question must complete within the given period without delaying any minutes. If the questions are not clear, they can clarify it from the examiners. Malpractice during an examination is completely prohibited. If anyone is found copying from another’s paper, the examinees involved will be suspended from the examination hall.  They are given 15 minutes additional time to check whether they have finished what are the essential to do and can submit their answer sheet to the examiner, who sends them to the respective scholars to check. Again when the marks of five papers are reached back, all concerned members of examination controller gather and list the results according to the grade. Students must obtain certain marks from all five subjects to promote in higher grade. Generally, the pass mark from main subject is 40 and that of minor 33. If any students who require only four or five marks to promote are given chance to appear in re-examination and if they qualify, they can continue in the higher grade. Those who scores more than 60% are grouped in the first division, whereas, between 50% and 60% in 2nd division, others between 40% and 50% are title as 3rd division accordingly. Formerly, we have custom of giving rewards to those two examinees with highest marks in the class by late His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche along with the spiritual advice to the students. However same are carried out by two Chogtrul Rinpoche and three Khenchens.
